“I am such a nonchalant friend. You decide to bail on plans? That’s alright. You’d rather hang out with your man? No worries! You haven’t talked to me in 3 weeks? That’s ok too. At the end of the day, we all have our own lives to live and I’m always going to be here.”
This most definitely is not the norm. Most people will find themselves losing their friends if they always treat them like second best. You will have friends that come and go throughout your lifetime, but the genuine friends will always be there. A good friend respects you for who you are, is always there for you and makes you a better person.
A good friend is someone that you can depend on. She is always there to listen to your problems, even if it is 2 in the morning! This should be a two way street though. She should be able to count on you to be there for her too.
We all have goals and ambitions. A good friend is always there for you to help support you with what you want out of life. She will be there to help you stay on track and to help you get back up and keep trying when you fail. She makes you a better person.
If you are in a relationship with someone, you should not shine your good friendships that you previously had. It is actually healthier for couples to continue their previous friendships. It is important to do things without your partner too. Make plans to get together with your friends and make sure that you keep them. Cancelling plans that you make just shows your friend that they are not as important to you.
A good friend is someone that is always there for you, not only when it is convenient for them. She doesn’t cancel plans with you because something better came up. She respects your feelings and reciprocates the friendship. This is not to say that it is not ok to have friends that do not reciprocate your friendship. You may find that your positive interactions, by treating them with kindness and respect, influence them to act the same. If you are ok with this, continue your friendship regardless of it being reciprocated. Just make sure that you still have other people in your life that will always be there for you.
